For over 2 decades I have been moving band t-shirts from apartment to apartment, and now to the basement of my house. I’ve said for years that I want to make a punk rock quilt out of them. What’s more punk than a quilt? I don’t know how to quilt, so until I learn I will be posting pix of these vintage gems and remembering when.
Welcome to T-shirt Tuesday #2
The long sleeve rock shirt, something you don’t see too much of these days. Sense Field is one of those bands I throw in the bucket of “when Revelation Records went weird”. Many of my favorite bands from the early to mid 90’s are in this bucket. Revelation Records definitely taught me that change can be a good thing. I think about the early Rev releases; Side by Side, No for an Answer, Youth of Today, I fell in love with the message and intensity of those records. Then there were the years when things got weird; Into Another, Farside and Sense Field. It was with these bands that I fell in love with music. They were all doing something different and it all sounded amazing.
My friend Brian (the bass player in downtide) introduced me to killed for less. This reocrd was so different from everything else we were listening to at the time. Melodic vocals mixed with a really solid rhythm section and kinda trippy, swirly guitars. I was a huge fan from the start.
Killed for Less helped me through a particularly tough break up, and more specifically a long ride home from Boston College to Warwick RI. I had the chance to tell that story to Jon Bunch at one of the early warped tours. It seemed like it made his day, so that was cool.
In their later years, my interest in the music that sense field was putting out waned. It’s really unfortunate because I do feel the self titled record, Killed for Less and Building are just wonderful records.
So, the question is, who knew Rodney Sellars started a new band and released a record in 2006? Why didn't anyone tell me?
In researching a few things for this post, I discovered that Rodney Sellars started the year zero, after sense field. I was always a sucker for the tunes Rodney sang and I was surprised to here these songs from 2006 were not too far off from the really trippy stuff I liked on sense fields early records. Long story longer, I ordered Oceania I will Return. I’m listening to it as I type this and I’m kinda digging it.
